Coram Deo is a network of NYC residents committed to certain life rhythms. We do this not out of compulsion, but in recognition that we are fruitful in our calling to the extent that we have properly stewarded God's Presence in our individual lives. In order to demonstrate a pattern of long obedience, it is essential that we deliberately and collectively organize our lives around the following essential things.
1. Inward Disciplines. The inward spiritual disciplines of silence, prayer, fasting, and scripture study are the foundations of our life with God. Coram Deo residents encapsulate our commitment to these practices by incorporating them into our Rule of Life. A Rule of Life gives structure for our daily lives by periodically slowing us down and enabling us to pay attention to God in everything we do.
2. Outward Disciplines. The outward disciplines of simplicity, sabbath, and service. Each of these virtues represent a practical demonstration of how the way of Jesus provides a life giving alternative to the cultural drift of modern urban living. Rather than accumulating more and more, simplicity encourages us to be content with what we have. As opposed to working longer and harder, sabbath tells us that one day with Him is more productive than hundreds in the workplace. Rather than focusing our energies on project self, service says only in serving others can we truly find ourselves.
3. Corporate Disciplines. We believe in worshiping, celebrating and practicing confession as a community. We become what we worship, and thus we worship the Lord together in silence and in song. We celebrate to remind ourselves that God is good, and we are witnesses to his goodness in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). We confess our faults and shortcomings to one another because bringing these to light is the pathway to freedom.
